چکیده

Explanation: Extrapleural fat, endothoracic fascia, and the innermost layers of intercostal muscle are superficial to the parietal pleura. Extrapleural fat is usually seen as a 1mm thick low attenution line on chest CT and is almost imperceptible in normal individuals.2 It may be thicker in obese patients. Accumulation of blood in the extrapleural space results in an extrapleural hematoma (EPH), which displaces the overlying extrapleural fat centrally and is most commonly the result of injury to intercostal arteries or veins.3 EPH is an underreported complication of blunt chest trauma. Less common causes of EPH include aortic rupture, penetrating trauma, and iatrogenic injury.3–6

The Pleural Sandwich Sign in Two Cases of Primary Pleural Lymphoma

The sandwich sign is used to describe mesenteric lymphoma in which mesenteric vessels and fat are enveloped by enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes. We present two cases of primary pleural lymphoma demonstrating the "pleural sandwich sign". Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed conglomerated parietal pleural and extrapleural masses encasing the intercostal arteries. Histopathological examinat...

Factors Influencing Residual Pleural Opacity in Tuberculous Pleural Effusion

Tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) leads to residual pleural opacity (RPO) in a significant proportion of cases. The aim of this study was to investigate which TPE patients would have RPO following the treatment. This study was performed prospectively for a total of 60 TPE patients, who underwent pleural fluid analysis on the initial visit and chest radiographs and computed tomography (CT) scan...

The incomplete border sign.

Appearance: Extrapulmonary lesions often show indistinct borders along at least a portion of their margins at chest radiography. This classic sign has been termed the “incomplete border sign.” Explanation: At radiography, visibility of a sharp border depends on (a) a difference in density between a lesion and adjacent structures, and (b) an edge tangent to the x-ray beam. When not directly adjac...

Spontaneous bilateral extrapleural hematoma: a case report

Extrapleural hematoma (EPH) is a rare condition characterized by the accumulation of blood in the extrapleural space. EPH is generally identified by computed tomography (CT), which shows an inward displacement of extrapleural fat due to intrathoracic peripheral fluid accumulation (Ann Ital Chir 75(83): 5, 2004; J Korean Radiol Soc 49: 89-97, 2003; Monaldi Arch Chest Dis 63(3): 166-169, 2005). Extrapleural pneumonectomy of recurrent thymoma with pleural dissemination

Complete surgical resection has been considered the only curable treatment for thymoma. The efficacy of extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) for stage IV thymomas remains controversial. In this case report, we utilize EPP for recurrent thymoma with pleural dissemination and describe the resulting outcome. A 39-year-old female with a history of thoracoscopic thymectomy for type B2 thymoma was referr...
